Finally, a video that doesn’t feature my crotch! It’s a thing, check for yourself. However, it does show you how to prepare something for your crotch.
People often describe prepping for strap-on sex as awkward, and that’s reasonable, especially when adjusting to a new harness with a plethora of straps and snaps and velcro. Once you’ve done it a handful of times though (or decided to use a brief-style harness), things move a lot quicker. Even as someone who’s done this many, many times, there’s still one thing that hangs me up: fitting a (often large) dildo through an O-ring.
This is less of a problem with metal or silicone rings since they detach from the harness, and the ring must be larger than the circumference of the toy in order to accommodate the snaps that hold it in place. Also, most of the hold-up with these types of O-rings can be solved with a little lube.
Elastic O-ring are a whole different game though; they’re wonderful because they accommodate a wide range of toy sizes, and you don’t have the extra step of snapping it to the harness, but the one-size-fits-all thing becomes a lot more difficult when you’re talking about substantial dildos (usually 1.75-2.25″ in diameter). 
As well as being time consuming, pushing a dildo through an elastic O-ring causes friction that can tear the fabric of a harness over time [see my partner’s RodeoH harness, after about a year of use]. Unlike metal and silicone O-rings, elastic O-rings are unfazed by the magical efforts of lube: the compression squeegees it off and the fabric just sucks it up, but there is a trick! It sounds ridiculous, but it works.
Use a plastic bag.
If you think rustling a bag around will only make strap-on prep more awkward, then I’m going to say… maybe. It depends on what you consider awkward. For me, jamming, rolling, and shoving a dildo mid-air, on the dresser, against my leg for a full minutes is far more awkward than grabbing a pre-cut bag and slipping it over a dildo before sliding it into my harness. That’s another thing, cut the bag before you’re actually standing there in the buff with a dildo and harness in your hand, unless you wish to have pre-sex craft time with your partner(s) to make individualized dildo bags, which I fully endorse.
If you’re still worried about seeming uncouth, find the beauty in the bag: the opportunity, the prospect of swifter dildo-wrangling… the American Beauty footage. Or maybe, find a bag with adorable cats printed on it, because who’s going to judge you then.
This isn’t my original idea, and many other people have suggested it (like this animated SpareParts video that makes inserting a dildo into an O-ring look like a seal jumping through a hoop), but some dildos are large and some O-rings are tights and some harnesses aren’t meant to withstand that much friction, so I wanted to share this tip on how to make it easier.
I had to put in effort to make this five steps, it’s that easy.
- Grab a plastic bag. I use a gallon zip-lock because it’s easy to cut and re-use, but you can choose any plastic bag that will fit your dildo.
- Cut the bag so it covers most of the dildo, leaving a bit of room above the base (about an inch or two).
- Place the bag over the dildo and slip it through the O-ring until you reach the bottom.
- Pull the bag off.
- Get a burrito to celebrate the glorious ease you just experienced.
